PetLynx PetMeter™

Live System Snapshot
This component of the PetLynx PetMeter™ lets you view the PetLynx Utility at work. The numbers are a live-to-screen generated account of active lost and found reports and, most importantly, a live glimpse of the AutoMatch™ Google-like search engine. The unique AutoMatch™ search engine performs searches for lost pets against pets admitted to any shelter or pound through AnimalTRACS™ or ShelterLynx™ as well as those from found reports and those registered in the central database to produce a list of potential matches. The owners are then contacted automatically by email for a happy reunion.

The Live System Snapshot refreshes every time you connect to show the activity on the system in real-time. The "Active Lost Reports" number shows the actual Lost Reports on the system. The "Active Found Reports" number shows the actual found reports available on the system. The AutoMatch™ number shows the number of potential matches that are still outstanding for lost and found dogs. As reports and potential matches clear the numbers update automatically.

North America
This component of the PetLynx PetMeter™ provides a real time graphic presentation of the most compelling reasons why a global database for pet identification needs to exist. Simply put, the industry can't recover and adopt animals that become separated from their owners and, in addition, is needlessly euthanizing many millions of adoptable pets. The ramifications for owners, for pets and the industry are huge. The emotional cost can't be evaluated in dollars; however, the cost to the industry is in the billions.

It is a well known fact, "you can't manage what you can't count." That is why we have undertaken to assemble and make this information available to our visitors and the industry in general.

Where do these numbers come from?
Today these numbers are aggregated from a painstaking summary of data from six major sources:
  • Canadian Federation of Humane Societies [CFHS]
  • Humane Society of the United States [HSUS]
  • Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science
  • National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy
  • Animal People
  • USA Today - Pet Population Study
How accurate are these numbers?
No one is sure. Our research has uncovered a margin of error in reported euthanizations across North America that may be as high as 30%. Wow! Can't we get a closer number than that? You bet we can! But the industry has to collect and share data in the same format. That's where PetLynx comes in. On a completely industry-neutral basis, we have developed the AnimalTRACS™ Utility to collect and present this data for everyone in the industry. Watch as the list of contributors and therefore the accuracy grows, so that we all get a handle on the problem and the solution for each of our communities.

Why do we need these numbers?
We all need to understand the problem and have the information that can help us to raise budgets, prioritize our responses and most of all, measure our progress. In cities like Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where identification of the dog population is over 90%, the return rate is greater than 80% and the rate of euthanasia of adoptable pets is among the lowest in North America. If this same statistic could be realized in the rest of North America, it would save the lives of millions of pets. We imagine the day when each community can automatically compare performance with other cities of similar size and situation just by placing their data in AnimalTRACS™ - the Automated Global Recovery System. You can help make this happen by bringing this to the attention of your local SPCA, Animal Shelter or Animal Control unit.

Who can use the PetLynx PetMeters™?
All non-profit national bodies, municipal agencies or affiliates can subscribe to the PetMeter™ service at no cost in return for an agreement to provide their data to the PetMeter™ data warehouse and by providing a hyperlink to AnimalTRACS™. Other businesses, research establishments and public users can access the data for a nominal cost. Contact info@petlynx.net if you wish to explore this service in more detail.

Billions of Dollars. Come on?
You bet! USA Today reported it takes more than 2 billion dollars annually to house, care for and destroy homeless pets in North America. In addition to this cost is the lost opportunity for the industry to provide an average of $400 of food, supplies and services to each animal. This cost over the 5 million animals destroyed this year alone would amount to another 2 billion dollars. Of course, neither of these costs can represent the human and animal tragedies that are played out daily across North America. How can we calculate the emotional cost of a boy who's lost his dog or an employee of an animal shelter who faces the challenge of destroying as many as 80 pets daily just because we can't identify the owner or successfully place these animals for adoption.

Just a note!
Look at how many animals were lost just while you have been reading this! It's time we all turned our attention to this problem and embraced AnimalTRACS™ the Automated Global Recovery Service powered by PetLynx!
